Delete ‘American’ WhatsApp, Install ‘Indian’ Telegram – Fake Viral Message In Circulation Again

BJP’s DN Ramesh, a ward corporator in Bangalore posted an update on his Facebook page on May 26. He requested people to delete WhatsApp and to install an alternative messaging device called Telegram. He claimed that WhatsApp was an American company while Telegram was made in India and citizens should promote ‘Made in India’ products by using Telegram instead of WhatsApp.

His message is false, the foremost being that Telegram is not an Indian company. It was founded by two Russian brothers Pavel and Nikolai Durov and was originally based in Berlin. It is registered as both a Limited Liability Partnership in UK and as an American Limited Liability company. There is nothing Indian about Telegram.

Again, WhatsApp issued a statement in 2016 that it will be a free service forever and will not charge a subscription fee. Therefore, the claim of money going to an American company in form of subscription fees is incorrect.

This message first came into circulation in May 2014 and it had been debunked as fake. Suprisingly, the fake videos and messages keep circulating for over two years and more. It’s safe to say that these fake messages seem immortal.
