AMAZING FACTS ABOUT THE WOMAN, KASTURBA GANDHI
A lot of has been heard about Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi whom we all know as ‘Mahatma’, but little is heard or known about the woman behind this successful man.
Her name is Kasturba Gandhi and she is the wife of Mohandas Gandhi.
kasturba was born at Porbander in April 11, 1869 to a merchant father, Gokuldas Makanji and mother, Vrajkunwerba Kapadia Gokuldas. Her was father was a close friend of Mohandas’s father, Karamchand Gandhi.
Early marriages were a norm in those days so Mohandas and Kasturba got engaged when they were both just seven years old and got married at age 13 in 1882.
They only played together and became good friends for they were far too young to understand the responsibilities of marriage.
Kasturba singlehandedly raised their offspring as her husband Mohandas, had left for London in 1888.
She was a committed wife and encouraged her husband’s struggle towards India’s freedom with great effort.
Mohandas was very strict in character even towards the children but Katurba was close to them.
Kasturba supported her husband’s call for independence and addressed crowds when her husband was arrested.
She protested on behalf of Indians living in South Africa who were subjected to poor working conditions and consequently served a three-month jail term.
Kasturba helped Gandhi establish Sabarmati Ashram when they returned to India in 1915. She cared for him each time he fell ill without nay distress. This earned her the appellation Ba, which means mother.
Kasturba Gandhi died in 1944 at the age of 62.
