Vikram Malhotra‘s production house Abundantia Entertainment has officially announced the biopic of human-computer Shakuntala Devi. Talented actress Vidya Balan will play the lead role of Shakuntala Devi in the yet to be titled movie. The film will be based on the mathematical wizard or ‘human computer’, a nickname given to Shakuntala Devi for her extraordinary talent with numbers.
Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to share the official news. He wrote, “Vidya Balan as Shakuntala Devi… Vikram Malhotra-led Abundantia will be producing the film based on the life of a mathematical genius, the ‘human computer’ – Shakuntala Devi… Directed by Anu Menon… Starts later this year… Summer 2020 release… Official announcement:”
Interestingly, Shakuntala never received any formal education but her talent, procured her a place in the 1982 edition of The Guinness Book of World Records. Mathematical talent was not the only thing she possessed, she was also an astrologer, cookbook author, and a novelist. Her book, The World Of Homosexuals, is acknowledged as the first study of homosexuality in India.
The film will be helmed by Amazon Prime Original series Four More Shots Please!director Anu Menon. Vidya is quite thrilled for her part and says that Shankuntala was truly someone who embraced her identity, had a strong feminist voice and braved many a naysayer to reach the pinnacle of success.
Praising her talent Vidya said, “How incredible that ‘The Math Genius’, ‘The Human Computer’, was a small-town Indian girl, who took the world by storm.
